Red Top Test

Richard C. Allen, MD, PhD, FACS
Additional Notes: Length 00:22

The color red is very sensitive in determining any difference in optic nerve function between the two eyes.  The top of a dilating drop is a convenient device to use.  The patient is asked to look at the red top.  An occluder is then used to cover each eye separately.  The patient is asked to determine if there is any difference in the appearance of the red color between the two eyes, in particular the brightness of the color.
