*Dr. Caccamise has very generously shared his images of patients taken while operating during the "eye season" in rural India as well as those from his private practice during the 1960's and 1970's. Many of his images are significant for their historical perspective and for techniques and conditions seen in settings in undeveloped areas.

Modified Hughes' bridge flap for reconstruction of upper lid OS

Modified Hughes' bridge flap for reconstruction of upper lid OS

A diagnosis of recurrent melanoma required extensive left upper lid reconstruction. The patient was referred to Byron Smith, MD who was a world-class oculoplastic surgeon in New York City. The surgery was performed on 12/23/1970. The photo was taken in May 1971. Bridge flaps use lower lid tissue to reconstruct upper lid defects. The bridge flap is a full thickness flap, bringing both anterior and posterior lamellae at one time.
